Lovecraft’s cursed Arkham, simply refuse to leave. It’s frustrating, and kind of funny-as if Castle Rock is not horror but a campy, dark comedy, about denizens of a doomed place called “Murdertown, U.S.A.” who, like the residents of Gotham City and H.P. But despite Lacy and others’ conviction that Caste Rock is cursed, the residents seem fairly committed to clinging, limpet-like, to the flinty New England land they’re accustomed to. And the thing is, they’re right.”Ĭastle Rock, executive produced by King and headed by showrunners Dustin Thomason and Sam Shaw, offers the townsfolk the stirrings of self-awareness, as if they have suddenly realized they’re bit players in a series of horror novels. I lie awake at night thinking about all the blood spilled under my roof alone. “Every inch is stained with someone’s sin. “Take any house in this town-hell, take mine,” says Shawshank State Prison warden Dale Lacy ( Terry O’Quinn), who kills himself in the first scene of the first episode. Awful things happen a little too frequently there’s a legacy of carnage under the foundations. In Hulu’s drama, the residents of the forlorn, gray town know something is wrong with Castle Rock. The Dead Zone and Cujo are both set there, and King’s other stories make frequent mention of the place as his fiction meanders up and down through inhospitable Maine landscapes, from the state penitentiary at the center of The Shawshank Redemption to a fictionalized version of Bangor in It. The fictional location was invented by Mainer Stephen King, and has been repeatedly revisited over the course of his prolific career. To be sure, that’s easier said than done-and much of the deliberately paced, horror-tinged appeal of Castle Rock, a Hulu original, lies within the nostalgic, maddening power of the benighted American small town. One wishes the residents of Castle Rock, Maine, would just move already.
